Meet Jamela

Doctor Jamela is a Colorado native and University of Colorado graduate. She completed her undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Developmental Biology at CU Boulder and went on to receive her Doctorate of Pharmacy at CU-Anschutz medical campus where she graduated Valedictorian of her class. Jamela completed her residency at The Nebraska Medical Center and has spent the majority of her pharmacist career practicing in a hospital setting, focusing on internal medicine and emergency medicine. Jamela has trained through the Institute of Functional Medicine and spent significant time working in an established clinic alongside community leaders in functional medicine. Jamela is the Colorado state leader through the Functional Pharmacist’s Alliance and thrives in spreading the knowledge and skills of functional medicine with her pharmacist colleagues. Jamela is also a certified yoga instructor and enjoys teaching private classes, benefit classes, and classes at various medical conferences.

Outside of work Dr. Jamela loves to spend time with her husband outdoors hiking, climbing, biking, skiing, all alongside their 85 lb sweetest blind dog Buckley. A couple summers ago she climbed Mount Rainier and last winter she embarked on a 100-mile backcountry ski tour through Colorado’s 10th Mountain Huts. She certainly has plans to climb big mountains near and afar in the future. Jamela has so much love, compassion and energy for not only her close family and friends, but also for her patients and clients.

My Philosophy

Get to the root of dis-ease with a holistic, tailored, personalized, systems-based approach. Functional medicine is a revolution in healthcare, integrating allopathic and holistic practices in addition to acknowledging the current state of our environment. The Institute of Functional Medicine definition of functional medicine is: Individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. All of humanity has a right to feel alive and to thrive in their lifetime by means of achieving peak health. People are overwhelmed with the amount of prescription medications they take and our society is sicker than ever. It is my call to action to encourage and facilitate healing and ease in the treatment and prevention of chronic disease, meanwhile recommending lifestyle medicine to aid in the transition off prescription medications. My goal is to humanize the pharmacy experience!

I have provided care to acutely ill patients in a hospital setting for 15 years and every day I am amazed by the amount of medications each patient is prescribed to take and the lack of understanding and ownership that each patient has on his/her own health. Our healthcare system as it stands is overburdened. Our current model is a “sick-care” model, rather than healthcare. The current system does not facilitate the means to set our patients up for success and the ability to achieve peak health, simply by overmedicating and under-educating. Rather than treating symptoms, we need to “look under the hood” to understand the many influences on our biology and how our environment and lifestyle interact with our genes to create (im)balances that are at the root of our (dis)ease. Rooted in authenticity, I coach to empower clients to take ownership of their health and journey their way to living a thriving life rather than simply surviving one day to the next! Together, Let's DeRX in order to ThriveRX!!
